Terms & Abbreviations

Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.

Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.

Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Half Treble Crochet(s): htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining three loops.

Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Tips For Success

Stitch Markers: When transitioning from the circle to the square, keep a close eye on where your corners are forming.

Blocking Helps: To get a perfectly straight-edged square, lightly block your finished motif. This helps set the shape and smooth the edges.

Yarn Choice Matters: A smooth, worsted or DK weight yarn works well to show off the stitch definition and shape contrast. Switching up your colours will also give you different results. play around with variegated or tweed yarns to create different results.

Free Crochet Pattern: Circle in a Square

Make magic circle with Colour A

Round 1: 3 ch (counts as st here and throughout), into ring work 11 tr, join with sl st into top of 3-ch. Close ring. (12 sts)

Round 2: 3 ch, tr in st at base of 3-ch, work 2 tr in each st around, join with sl st into top of 3-ch. (24 sts)

Round 3: 3 ch, tr in st at base of 3-ch, tr in next st, *2 tr in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * around, join with sl st into top of 3-ch. (36 sts)

Round 4: 3 ch, tr in st at base of 3-ch, tr in next 2 sts, *2 tr in next st, tr in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st into top of 3-ch, changing to yarn B in last yo. Fasten off yarn A. (48 sts)

Round 5: 3 ch, tr in st at base of 3-ch, *1 ch, 2 tr in next st, htr in next st, dc in next 8 sts, htr in next st, 2 tr in next st; repeat from * around, omitting last 2 tr on final rep, join with sl st into top of 3-ch. (56 sts, 4 1-ch sps)

Round 6: 3 ch, tr in next st, *[2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr] in 1-ch sp, tr in next 14 sts; repeat from * two more times, [2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr] in 1-ch sp, tr in next 12 sts, join with sl st into top of 3-ch. (72 sts, 4 2-ch sps)

Fasten off and sew in ends.
