Celebrate the month of May with a Crochet Hawthorn flower. Hawthorn flowers are the second birth flower for May with the first being Lily of the Valley. A cluster of flowers often with berries at the same time, Hawthorn flowers range from pure whites to pastel pinks. Hawthorn flower represents hope and new beginnings. They are also the symbol for love and marriage as they can also represent love, romance and passion. The thorny branches can also symbolize protection and resilience.
The first birth flower for May is the Lily of the Valley flower. These beautiful little stems which have a cascade of flowers, symbolize purity, humility, and sweetness. If you would like to make my Lily of the Valley Crochet Birth Flower click HERE.
This is an easy crochet flower pattern to create, which you can make with nearly any yarn you have in your stash. Make your flowers in pure white or get creative like me and add a pink blush to the tips of the petals with some paint to create the pastel pink blooms. You can make your flower with any yarn and matching sized crochet hook (although you do want to keep your stitches tight, so use the smallest crochet hook you can for your sized yarn). Depending on the size of yarn, you use will increase or decrease your sized flower, but I can promise they will all be beautiful. To create a stem as I have you will need to make between 5 flowers, 2 buds and 2 leaves.
My free pattern includes the step by step tutorial to crochet the flower ONLY. If you would like to support me to continue creating FREE PATTERNS, you can purchase the full PDF pattern including Flower, buds and Leaf tutorial in my Webshop or in my Etsy for only $1.99.

How to Paint Crochet Hawthorn Flower
If you would like to create pink Hawthorn flowers, follow the steps below if not jump to the assembly section below.
Step 1: Create the tone of pink you would like for your flower ( I lightened my ready made pink acrylic paint with white to make a pastel pink that I was happy with), add some water to make your paint more diluted.
Step 2: Using a dry paintbrush carefully paint the edge of the flower with the paint, then bring the paint strokes from the edge of the petal to the center of the flower – this will create a gradient effect. If your paint is to dry add a drop of water. Continue this process until all your petals are painted. Allow to dry before adding the stamen motif.
How to Assemble Crochet Hawthorn Flower
Step 1: Using the long tail from the sepal sew the motif into the center of the flower. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Step 2: Bend the florist wire in half, thread this through the center base of the flower, fold the wire in half to create a double stem. Thread 2 meter piece of green thread through the base of the flower as shown below.
Step 3: Carefully wrap the yarn around the folded wire. Next fold the tips of the wire, up against the stem, continue wrapping the yarn around all the wires (this will create a smooth tip), once you reach the end. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
