Crochet Sage Leaf โ€“ Free Pattern

As promised for the Holiday season here is my Crochet Sage Leaf Free Pattern. I first showed you this new Crochet leaf back in July. When I was working on my Christmas in July to try and be ahead of the game and ready for Christmas in time. Well, I have just about managed it. Last week I finally finished my Crochet Christmas Wreath.

This was for the first time I have made a full Crochet Wreath with wired motifs and it was worth the many hours of crochet work. To create this Free Crochet leaf pattern, I was inspired by the beautiful herbal plant, Sage. A beautiful aromatic plant which has a gorgeous fuzzy texture.

This is a quick easy crochet make which can be made with any yarn! I create a realistic replica in yarn I have used a Sage coloured cotton yarn (Circulo Amigurumi Yarn in Eucalyptus) plus the addition of a strand of cream Mohair yarn which I had in my stash. Created from 3 different sized crochet leaf motifs to look like a real stem of Sage. I will also share with you, how you can crochet over wire to create a firm, bendable crochet stem.

My free Crochet Sage Leaf pattern is written below with a simple step by step written photo tutorial or if you prefer a video tutorial, I have also made a Youtube video.

Materials

  • 20-30 meters Sport weight Yarn (I have used Circulo Amigurumi Yarn in Eucalyptus)
  • 20 meters of Mohair yarn in cream
  • Matching crochet hook for your yarn I have used between 2.5 mm | B Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • 40cm piece of wire
  • 4 l 6 x 15cm piece of wire
  • Pliers

Gauge: N/A Use the smallest crochet hook you can with your chosen yarn to create tight stitches, this will help your leave keep the form.

Size: My crochet Sage Leaf Small 3.5cm in length, Medium 4cm in length, Large 5cm in length.

Notes: The leaves are made as individual motifs then wrapped together around a central stem. Each leaf is made using both sides of the foundation chain.

Crochet Stitches

To make my crochet Safe Leaf, you will be using a few advanced crochet stitches including: Double Crochet (dc), Treble Crochet (tr).

Large Leaf (Make 2 | 4)

Step 1: Bend all of the smaller wires creating a squared curve through the middle, as shown in the photo below. This will aid you to crochet over the wire.

Row 1: Chain 10, sc in the second from the hook catching the yarn under the wire, as shown in the photo below. Continue all the following stitches in this manner. Therefore you are crocheting over the wire with every stitch.

hdc, 2dc, tr, 2dc, hdc, (hdc, dc, hdc) in the final chain. Fold the wire to align parallel with the first side, continue to crochet on the opposite side of the foundation chain,

hdc, 2dc, tr, 2dc, hdc, sc in the final chain. Cut the yarn leaving a 10cm tail. Fasten off.

Medium Leaf (Make 2)

Row 1: Chain 8, sc in the second from the hook (catching the yarn under the wire, continue all the following stitches in this manner), hdc, 3dc, hdc, (hdc, dc, hdc) in the final chain. Fold the wire to align parallel with the first side, continue to crochet on the opposite side of the foundation chain, hdc, 3dc, hdc, sc in the final chain. Cut the yarn leaving a 10cm tail. Fasten off.

Small Leaf (Make 2)

Step 1: Bend the 40cm wire creating a squared curve through the middle.

Row 1: Chain 7, sc in the second from the hook (catching the yarn under the wire, continue all the following stitches in this manner), hdc, 2dc, hdc, (sc, hdc, sc) in the final chain. Fold the wire to align parallel with the first side, continue to crochet on the opposite side of the foundation chain, hdc, 2dc, hdc, sc in the final chain. Cut the yarn leaving a 2m tail. Fasten off.

Assembly

Step 1: Using the long tail from the small leaf, carefully wrap the wire step with the yarn, once you reach 5cm below the stem, align the 2 Medium leaves on either side of the stem, as shown.

Step 2: Continue wrapping the yarn around all the wires, once you reach 5cm below the first set of leaves, align the 2 Large leaves on either side of the stem.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 if you are making a 7 leaf stem. Next fold the long wire up against the stem, continue wrapping the yarn around all the wires (this will create a smooth tip), once you reach the end. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
