About Mosaic Crochet

Mosaic crochet is a captivating colourwork technique that allows you to create intricate, geometric patterns using simple stitches. Unlike traditional colourwork methods, mosaic crochet typically works with one colour per row. This means no complicated yarn changes mid-row or tangled yarn! The beautiful patterns emerge as you layer contrasting rows, often using clever stitch placement to reveal bold motifs and textures. The Frosty Pines blanket uses the overlay mosaic technique.

What is a CAL?

CAL stands for Crochet-Along, which is a fun and interactive way for crocheters around the world to work on the same project at the same time. During a CAL, parts of a pattern are released in stages, and participants follow along together. It’s a great way to stay motivated, learn new techniques, and connect with others in the crochet community. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, a CAL turns a solo hobby into a shared creative experience with plenty of support from the lovely crochet community, with encouragement and inspiration along the way!

Never Tried Mosaic Crochet?

Don’t worry! Mosaic crochet might look complicated, but it’s actually made using simple stitches, mostly double crochets, treble crochets and chains with colour changes to create that striking effect. We’ll walk you through it all, one round at a time. This CAL uses Overlay crochet, so if you’ve never tried mosaic crochet, I’d encourage you to try this technique before the CAL starts in November!

Joining & Border – Week 3: Monday 17th November

You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.

1-6

  • Once your squares are made, steam block to 35.5cm X 35.5cm (14in X 14in).
  • You will now be joining your squares using mattress stitch (or your preferred sewing method) by placing two squares together with right sides facing (see chart info below).
  • Begin by sewing the ‘short joins’ following the chart.
These joins are represented with dotted lines. You will have two rows in the formation of square 1-2-1 and two rows in the formation of 2-1-2.
  • Do not sew in the ends until the end of the project.
  • Once you have formed your rows, you will now join these to form the full blanket. These joins are represented by the solid lines. Place two rows together with right sides facing.
