Learn How to Crochet a Butterfly: Quick & Easy Makes

Colour Inspiration

The possibilities are endless with this pattern as it looks lovely in all combinations of colours from soft pastels, to varigated or bright and bold shades! If you need more inspiration when it comes to choosing yarn colours click here. Persoanlly I would recommend using cotton yarn for a neat, crisp finish.

Pattern Use Ideas

  • Add a brooch back or hair clip to turn your butterfly into wearable art!
  • Attach them to floristry wire and stick them in your plant pots.
  • Crochet a chain to your desired length and attach it to create butterfly bunting.
  • Add these lovely butterflies as sweet detail to a scarf or hat.

  • Written in UK terms but switchable to US crochet terms above.

terms & abbreviations

Chain (ch)Yarn over and then pull through one loop on hook

Treble Crochet (tr)Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop (then you should have 3 loops on hook), (yarn over, then pull through 2 loops) twice.

Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, then pull yarn through stitch and the loop on hook

Free Crochet Butterfly Pattern

You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.

  • Ch 6 and then insert hook into first chain and then ss to create circle.
  • Ch 3, tr into centre circle, *ch 2, 2 tr into centre circle* 7 times and then ch 2. Insert hook into third chain from the bottom and then join with slip stitch. Now, you should have 8 clusters of 2 tr stitches.
  • Change colour if desired connecting new colour in tr space.
  • *6 tr into chain 2 space, ss in tr space* 7 times, 6 tr into ch 2 space, ss into top of original stitch to connect and then ch 8.

  • Fold the work in half (wrong sides facing) and then wrap the chain around the work connecting at the base of the chain with a slip stitch and then tie off.
  • Take a piece of yarn about 2 inches in length and tie a knot on each end. Slip the yarn under the chain and then move into desired place.
  • You can now sew on a brooch fitting or alternatively attach a safety pin in order to turn into a brooch furthermore, you could sew it on another project!
