About the Grit Stitch

The grit stitch is a textured, sturdy stitch pattern that creates a lovely, slightly raised effect. It’s an intricate way of using double crochet stitches, forming a balanced yet visually interesting design. The grit stitch is excellent for projects that require a little extra texture.

  • Yarn: In the sample images I have used Paintbox Cotton DK However, You can use any weight yarn and recommended hook size that can be found on the band/label of your chosen yarn.
  • Hook:  4mm (G -6) or corresponding hook size to the yarn weight chosen.

Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.

Terms & Abbreviations

Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.

Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.

Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Free Crochet Pattern: Grit Stitch

You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.

Chain in multiples of 2 + 1.

Row 1: dc in second ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as st), *skip next ch, 2 dc in next ch, repeat from * across until 1 ch remains, dc in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: 1 ch (does not count as st here and throughout), dc in first st, *skip next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * across until 1 st remains, dc in last st. Turn.

Repeat Row 2 until desired height.

Fasten off and sew in ends.
